about

Reclusive, South Bristol, singer-songwriter Alan Stilton has made the journey from his caravan on Novers Hill to Bedminster to shoot a video for his new single release;
The Day the High Street Died

This new release is Alan’s wry and poignant look at the tragedy currently unfolding in South Bristol and around the country. The first cut from the forthcoming album ‘Fresh Eggs’ will no doubt cause laughter and raise eyebrows in some corners. (Marvin Rees this means you)

While enjoying a cup of tea in a break in shooting Alan said:

‘I remember this street when there was a Woolworths, twenty five pubs, a sweet shop and a record shop. Look at St Catherine's place now!! oh blimey. No sugar thanks’.

lyrics

Pushing through the market square
So many shoppers sighing
News had just come over
That the high street was dying

All the bins were overflowing
And the Mayor, he didn’t care
As long as the flats went up to the sky
And he didn’t have to go down there

It was the end of Woolworths, Argos and Gateway
Iceland, Boots, Dixons and C&A
In the closing down sales there were bargains galore
My trolley was so full I had no room for more
Carpet cleaners, or all the multi-surface cleaners or toilet cleaners
I never knew I needed so many cleaners

I bought a dehumidifier (even though I didn’t need one)
I bought a hair dryer in the shape of a ray gun
I bought wires and pliers and bicycle tires
There was twenty percent off of deep fat fryers

I think I saw you in Woollies
But I might have been wrong
You were filling a bag with pick and mix sweets
Don’t think you knew you were in this song

Then all the signs were turned to closed
The shutters were pulled down
I saw a tumble weed rolling through
the centre of the town

But then I saw bus loads of people getting of at bus stops
Their purses were open they wanted to shop
But they looked so confused they didn’t know
That that the shops had closed down
They wanted to go to

Wilko, It was closed down
Wilko, There’s a hole in the town
Wilko, We’ll never know
Wilko, We’ll never go to
Wilko Never again
Wilko I need a friend
Wilko We haven’t got
Wilko My brain hurts a lot
